“A clean bike is a fast bike, but a race ready bike is perfection on two wheels”.
We’re sticklers for details here at Maximus. A finely tuned, exquisitely prepared bike will help you go as fast as you possibly can with the least amount of risk for missed shifts or the dreaded “mechanical troubles”. So what does go into making a bike truly “Race Ready”?
It’s not a fairly simple wash and tune-up, which would be fine for long training rides and monthly servicing. A Race Ready bike must have the following traits:
- Perfect Shifting
- Perfect Braking
- Perfect Steering
- Perfect Chassis
By “Perfect” we mean exactly that; no sloppy shifting, no loose brakes, no wobbly steering whatsoever. The bike should feel tight as a barrel and should respond as if it were hardwired to your brain. To achieve this, our crew will perform the following tasks:
Shifting : clean and tune front and rear derailleurs to planned race day gearing, set cable tension, replace cables as necessary
Braking: clean and adjust brake calipers/rotors to planned race day wheelset clearance, set brake lever reach, change brake cable/hydraulic fluid if necessary
Steering: overhaul headset assembly and set preload, replace if necessary; check and set handlebar and stem alignment
Chassis: clean fork and frame, set all bolts to manufacturer-spec torque settings, apply carbon paste to seatpost and handlebar clamp (if carbon). Overhaul bottom bracket and planned race day wheelset hubs.
A full Race Ready service takes several hours to complete, but time spent on proper service is minutes saved on Race Day!
